Landing place by E.E. Vidal
Emeric Essex Vidal (1791-1861)
There was no safe pier for landing passengers at Buenos Aires until 1855. Ships stood out in a channel in the shallow River Plate and passengers were conveyed ashore by boat and, in the last stage, horse and cart. This watercolour depicts a visiting British admiral. From Picturesque illustrations of Buenos Ayres and Monte Video, consisting of twenty-four views: accompanied with descriptions of the scenery and of the costumes, manners, &c. of the inhabitants of those cities and their environs by E.E. Vidal, Esq (Ackermann: London, 1820)
